New Delhi, Sept 16: Northern Railway has launched a year-long program to create model zero-waste railway station and zero-waste railway colony in the city of Varanasi in partnership with Government of Uttar Pradesh (GoUP) and German Development Cooperation-GIZ India
Ashutosh Gangal, General Manager Northern Railway while flagging off of Swachhata Pakhwada said that the year-long initiative is a step towards sustainable waste management at railway stations and in railway colonies in the city of Varanasi.
“In the short-term (3-6 months), this initiative aims at creating a model zero-waste railway station and zero-waste railway colony in the city of Varanasi. The entire range of waste management activities right from waste audit to understand the composition of waste, to suggesting and implementing appropriate technologies for dry and wet waste management will be undertaken at selected railway stations and in selected colonies,” Gangal said.
“Facilities for treatment of biodegradable waste and non-biodegradable waste (Material Recovery Facility) with support of funding partners as per extant guidelines of Ministry of Railways will also be set up. A capacity-building video customized to railway experience is also planned during this phase for the benefit of other locations/divisions in Northern Railway as well as other Zonal railways,” he added.
The medium-term (3-12 months) activities include assessment of training needs through in-depth interactions with railway officials and Government of Uttar Pradesh as well as planning and development of training modules on various aspects of waste management for different levels of railway functionaries. To maximise outreach through these modules, online hosting of these modules along with development of toolkits for practitioners shall also be undertaken.
Sustained IEC activities and training of railway staff for awareness creation are also planned to be carried out during this phase.
The learnings from this project will not only benefit the railway set-up in Varanasi, but will also be used to inform other Units within Northern Railway as well as other Zonal Railways.
