KVK Rajouri organises awareness programme on Millets, Nutrition, Value of Trees

RAJOURI, Sept 17: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Rajouri today conducted a National Level Campaign on Poshan Vatika and Tree Plantation to commemorate the International Year of Millets- 2023. The programme was organized under the leadership of Prof. J. P. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor SKUAST Jammu and Dr S. K. Gupta, Director Extension. Over 90 farmers and farm women including PRIs participated in this one day Awareness Programme. The main objective of the programme was to sensitize the farmers and farm women about the importance of millets, nutritious food for healthy life and the value of trees in our life.
At the beginning of the programme Dr Suraj Parkash, Scientist, KVK welcomed the farmers and farm women and described the genesis of the programme. He highlighted the significance of nutrition for women and children. Dr Suraj informed that a balanced diet can overcome the problem of malnutrition in children.
Dr Arvind Kumar Ishar, Senior Scientist &Head, KVK Rajouri highlighted the importance of the campaign on Nutri- Garden and Tree Plantation. He motivated farmers and farm women to raise nutria-gardens at their homes to get a regular supply of nutritious and fresh vegetables and fruits. Dr Vikas Sharma, Scientist I/C RARS Rajouri informed the participants about the importance of traditional millets in the diet. He provided knowledge about the importance of pulses as a source of protein in the daily diet, especially for non-vegetarian people.
Dr Parul Gupta highlighted the benefits of breastfeeding for children. She said that a balanced diet also plays an important role in overcoming the problem of anaemia in women especially during pregnancy. She advised high nutrition and low calories food for young women and children. N.K.Sharma, representative of IFFCO informed the gathering about the importance of Nano fertilizer. He said that IFFCO has developed Nano Nitrogen (Liquid) fertiliser to address the imbalanced and excessive use of conventional Urea. He informed the farmers that this liquid fertilizer is so small in the package as compared to granular urea that it requires very little space and is also easy to carry without any labour requirement. During the programme seeds of seasonal vegetables like spinach, carrots, beans, and radish were distributed among farm women. Medicinal Plants and nano fertilizer were also distributed to the participants to encourage them to raise Nutri gardens and promote nano fertilizer technology. The programme was assisted by Tariq Hussain and Lokesh Sharma.
