Online education is a problem when children have a weak family background
Vijay GarG9/17/2021 11:58:24 PM
The importance of education in social, economic and political life, the importance of literacy for education, is one of such ragas. Schools were closed in Lokdown and primary classes have been almost closed since then. It is being said that online education has been effective in place of classroom education. But the report based on the survey, 'Naleem Per Tala' found something else. In the survey conducted in August, 1362 children and parents were included.
Half of the rural areas and one-fourth in urban areas did not have a single smartphone. Even where the phone is available, it is often with the mother or father. In such a situation, there is no phone during the child's studies. When there is more than one child studying in the house, but there is only one phone among all the children, even there children are facing problem in online studies. In such a situation, the older child gets priority, the younger one gets left. A child is more likely to use a smartphone than a child.
Since there is concern about the lives of the children, some poor parents have taken loans and bought smartphones for the child's education. Having a smartphone is the first stop. After this, it is also necessary for the family to have enough money for phone recharge. Due to the lockdown, financial problems have increased in these families and due to this, children's education is also missed in between.
Almost two thirds (57 urban and 65% rural) children studying online are also those for whom network is a major problem. At some places, they got the network by climbing a mountain and after some time they have to come down from the mountain to charge the phone. Somewhere due to these difficulties, the school child or girl child was sent to live in a relative's house so that studies would not be hampered.
Only 8-25% of children who studied regularly or occasionally were flummoxed by online classes or videos. In rural areas, in households where smartphones are available, 43% of the respondents said that they are not able to study regularly because nothing is being sent from school.
When online education is happening, then the need for help at home is more, but the parents of many children are not specially educated. There were many families where the child or the parent was facing problem in using the smartphone properly. Even whose parents are educated, they are not able to help the children right now because they have to stay outside for the whole day to earn. They have strong in front of them: earn to fill the stomach or focus on the education of children?
Discipline is important for studies. Discipline requires interest. When there is online learning going on, where there is little understanding, all the interest and discipline, especially for young children, is very difficult to maintain. Children told that even when online classes are being held, they are still missing the classroom because they are unable to ask questions online, they hesitate. It is difficult to read carefully because of the noise around.
Some pictures or files are sent in the name of online education. The handwriting is not clearly visible in the picture/file. Somewhere a message comes in WhatsApp yup that read the story of tortoise and hare. Quite a few children told that in the name of worksheet or homework, they only copy from the sent line book. What is written, there is no special understanding. The child enrolled in the first grade was given homework, although he did not go to school for a single day and was not taught writing by anyone. The teacher asked the mother to get the younger child's homework copied from the older child and submit it.
Parents are worried that children may not get addicted to phones. Some children just watch cartoons or play games on the phone in the name of studies. Ultimately, the point is that, at least at the primary and secondary levels, even in able-bodied families, online education falls short of classroom learning. Online education is a myth when the child has a weak family background.
