Early Times Report

JAMMU,Sept 23: The mortal remains of Ajay Dhar, 28, who was presently posted as follower in police department at Handwara, in north Kashmir was consigned to flames at Jagti colony Nagrota here on Thursday with full state honours. Hundreds of people participated in the funeral procession of the slain policeman.

The body of the deceased wrapped in the national flag reached here from Kashmir last night. After completing legal formalities the body was handed over to his family members for last rites. The deceased had lost his father in December last year and is survived by his mother and younger sister.

A pall of gloom descended at the Jagti residence of Ajay, where a large number of people from all walks of life assembled to pay their last respects to the departed soul who was killed by the fire of a sentry in case of mistaken identity.
The slain policeman was returning after performing his duty to a temple where he was putting up during the intervening night of September 21 and 22.He was having his mobile phone on and headphones were in his ears when he knocked the door.
The on duty sentry inside the temple premises asked him to disclose his identity but he didn’t respond to the sentry who in the meantime fired a gun shot in air but due to headphones in the ears he didn’t hear the sentry’s warning shot and attempted to make a forceful entry as a result of which the sentry on duty assumed it a militant attack and fired another shot wounding Ajay. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he breathed his last.
While unconfirmed sources said that some stray dogs were after him and he ran to make a forceful entry by jumping over a wall into the premises and the sentry on duty assumed that it was some militant related matter and opened fire on him.
Whatever the reasons may be, a thorough probe is needed to do justice with the deceased.
