Jammu, Oct 14: Five months after presenting an encouraging employment picture in the Union Territory of J&K, the Mumbai-based Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) now revealed an alarming situation in the UT where the unemployment rate has reached 21.6 percent which is an all-time high.
In April this year, the CMIE had presented an encouraging picture about the declining unemployment rate in the Union Territory. The authorities had claimed that it was the result of the job-oriented initiatives taken by the government that more and more youth are getting employment.
In April the CMIE had indicated that the unemployment rate in J&K was 9 percent which has gone below that of other northern states like Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi. Haryana's unemployment rate for the period stood at 28.1%, 22.1%, Rajasthan's at 19.7%, and Delhi's at 9.4%. The same CMIE in its recent report revealed that the unemployment rate in Jammu & Kashmir has the highest 21.6 percent in the country.
According to the CMIE’s “30-day moving average” survey for September, J&K has recorded a 21.6 per cent unemployment rate preceded by the states of Haryana and Rajasthan where the unemployment rate stood at 20.3 percent and 17.9 percent respectively.
At the beginning of 2021, J&K’s unemployment rate was 21.9 percent which dipped to 14.2 percent in February, 9.6 percent in April, 11.2 percent in May, and 10.6 percent in June.
Though the J&K’s unemployment rate, as per CMIE, has witnessed a decline from January 2021 till June 2021, it took an alarming turn in September when it surpassed the national average of unemployment.
The unemployment rates are produced by CMIE using its Consumer Pyramids Household Survey machinery. CMIE has pegged India’s unemployment rate at 6.9 percent which means J&K has a much higher unemployment rate than the national average.
According to the CMIE data, the unemployment rate in J&K has jumped from over 13 percent in August 2021 to 21.6 percent in September. As per the official data, J&K is the only region in India that has an over 20 percent unemployment rate.
