Early Times Report

KISHTWAR, Oct 17: The inhabitants of Matta village in the outskirts of Kishtwar town today held a strong protest against the Jal Shakti department for their failure to provide the drinking water to the people living in the village which is considered as highly densely populated area in the heart of Kishtwar.
As per the details available with Early Times, the angry people raised slogans against the officials of Jal Shakti department added that despite repeated requests to the concern officials of the department, the problem of non availability of drinking water continue to persists in the area.
The angry people told the Early Times that the department has withdrawn huge funds for laying the water pipe lines in the village, but all lines leading to the village are dried or had been left midway and unattended.
“We have even approach the district administration many times— but administration also fail to address this burning issue faced by the villagers” said angry villagers. The villagers said that the existing gravity line leading to the village required immediate upgradation added that the population of the village increased many fold in last few years since several people from the far flung villages of Kishtwar District construct their homes in the area that further complicated the problems being faced by the people.
“Jal Shakti department also installed hand pumps at various places in Matta village— but most of them are lying defunct and required immediate attention of the concern department” said another villager.
The villagers threaten to sit on Dharna outside the office of Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar in case the problems faced by the people could not be addressed in next two days.
The villagers said that the women had to travel several kilometres to fetch water and called upon the administration to look into the matter before the people took law into their own hands.
The people also rued the Government claims of successful functioning of prestigious 55 Cr Niagard water supply scheme and termed it as merely a rhotic and only a hollow claim that only exists on paper.
