Winning Jammu won't be a cakewalk
11/8/2021 11:25:43 PM
Bharatiya Janata Party in its executive meeting discussed Jammu and Kashmir and its plan to install its own government in the union territory.
There is every possibility about assembly elections being held in Jammu and Kashmir after the delimitation exercise gets completed. The political parties have already started making preparations for the elections as they have sniffed the polls. As far as the BJP's agenda is concerned it's clear that it wants to install the party's chief minister in J&K. But the point is will the party be able to win that many seats to form the government in J&K. Given the performance of its past MLAs it looks an uphill task.
Many people in Jammu believe that the local BJP leaders haven't been able to live upto the expectations of the people. The saffron party will have to look for something out of the box to convince the people of Jammu that it would work for their welfare.
In 2014 assembly elections, BJP won 25 out of 37 seats in Jammu region and went on to form the coalition government in J&K along with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the first time in seventy years. People of Jammu celebrated BJP's victory with a hope that the party leaders will become their voice. Unfortunately BJP leaders acted as second fiddles of the PDP and allowed it to call the shots. They were unable to carry forward Jammu's agenda and work for the development of people.
During the past seventy years, J&K has never got a Dogra Chief Minister as the highest office was always held by a leader from Kashmir region. The Valley used to send more representatives to assembly than the Jammu region. After delimitation exercise gets completed this discrimination would get over as Jammu and Kashmir regions will be able to send equal representatives to assembly. The people of Jammu are waiting for the day when they will see a Dogra from the region heading J&K. The BJP is aware of the fact that it can only win the elections by projecting itself as the champion of Jammu cause, but the point is will people believe in the saffron party again. During the past few years many local parties have emerged on the scene and have been raising the issues of Jammu vociferously. So winning Jammu with a thumping majority is not going to be a cake walk.
