| KVK Reasi promotes Lettuce Cultivation | | |  EARLY TIMES REPORT
REASI, Nov 19: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting the scientific cultivation of lettuce in Reasi district. KVK, Reasi scientists are providing the technical guidelines regarding the scientific cultivation of lettuce to the farmers so that they can generate more income and employment. According to Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr Banarsi Lal keeping the nutritional and economic security in view amid the COVID-19 pandemic, KVK, Reasi is endeavoring to enhance the income and employment among the farmers of the area by the introduction of new ventures in the district. He informed that lettuce is one of the salad crops grown commercially across the globe and its demand is increasing day-by-day due to its nutritional and diet values. He said that lettuce is a good source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. He added that it lowers cholesterol levels and protects neuronal cells of the body. He narrated that the lettuce crop has ample scope in the district and farmers can improve their livelihood security by its commercial cultivation.
According to Head, Division of Plant Physiology, SKUAST-J, Dr Gurdev Chand better quality of lettuce can help to find more marketing channels and thus the farmers can fetch more money by growing this crop. He added that it can also be grown in green house, poly house or hydroponically. He discussed on the nutritional and packing practices in lettuce crop for more profits. He informed the quality improvement and post-harvest technologies in lettuce crop. An innovative farmer from Gajore village of Pouni block Reasi district, Krishen Singh is yielding good results by growing lettuce crop and encouraging the other farmers to grow this crop. His lush green lettuce fields have become the centre of attraction in the area. |
