| Parts of Srinagar shut on Friday | | |

SRINAGAR, Nov 26: A shutdown is being observed in parts of Srinagar on Friday two days after three militants including a local commander were killed in an encounter, officials said.
The shops and business establishments in Srinagar's old city and city centre remained shut on Friday, they said. The public transport plied normally in most parts of the city.
The authorities had deployed a large number of force personnel in sensitive areas of the city to maintain peace.
Parts of Srinagar, especially the old city, have been tense after the Rambagh shooting on Wednesday evening that left three militants including a top wanted commander of ?The Resistance Front? (TRF), Mehran Yasin Shala, a resident of Jamalata, dead.
While police claim the three were killed in a gunfight, the local eyewitnesses contested the police claim saying "the three were shot dead and no gunfight took place in the area." Mehran is accused by police of a series of civilian killings including that of two teachers in Srinagar.
Soon after the news about the death of Mehran spread, a spontaneous shutdown was observed in the old city. There were also clashes between the protesters and the police in some parts of the city on Wednesday night, sources said.
Fearing trouble, the authorities suspended mobile internet in several parts of the old city on Wednesday evening to stop the spread of protests in other parts. An instant shutdown was also observed on Thursday in the old city. |
