Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 20: Notwithstanding tall claims of the higher-up to ensure transparency and accountability in governance, utilization of Rs 200 crores sanctioned by the Union Government for the development of sports in J&K is not visible on the fields.
Except for constructing buildings on the already squeezed playing fields, authorities have failed to utilize the whooping fund to improve sports infrastructure in J&K.
Exactly one year on January 20, 2021, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had promised that Jammu and Kashmir would witness a revolution in the sports sector.
He promised that the UT Government was taking innovative measures to overhaul the sports ecosystem of J&K, ensuring modern sports infrastructure coupled with world-class training for the young sporting talent to make J&K a sporting powerhouse.
One year has passed but nothing has been changed for budding sportspersons. During the last couple of years, only buildings and concrete structures were erected in playing fields situated within and in the outskirts of Jammu city.
Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha made these remarks after declaring open the Premier League at K.K Hakku Stadium Jammu on January 20, 2021.
Rs 200 Cr under the Prime Minister’s Development Package was sanctioned for the up-gradation of sports infrastructure and encouragement of budding talent in the field.
Another Rs 30 crores have been sanctioned by the Government for boosting sports infrastructure, training facilities, and providing professional coaches to hone the local talent.
It was also announced that for the promotion of sports at the grass-root level, elected representatives of Panchayats were been roped in and all the Panchayats were provided with sports kits worth Rs 20,000 each during the recently concluded Back to Village-Three programme as per the local requirements.
