| Grenade blast on Republic Day eve; 3 attacks in a fortnight! | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 25: A grenade blast on the eve of Republic Day in the summer capital of Srinagar raises concerns over security preparedness put in place by the Jammu and Kashmir administration.
It's for the first time in the recent years, that a grenade blast rocked high security area of Hari Singh High Street on January 25 afternoon less than 24 hours ahead of the mega celebrations.
A police official of the rank of inspector and three civilians were wounded in the incident.
While the police have registered a case and the area was instantly cordoned off, the incident, as per the experts raises concerns.
Observers said it was for the first time in the recent years that such an attack took place barely a kilometre away from the Civil Secretariat.
Official sources said a high alert had already been sounded in the summer capital of Srinagar especially in the civil lines.
Officials said it was third grenade attack in Srinagar in less than a fortnight.
On January 17, unidentified militants attacked the Police Control Room (PCR) with a grenade in the high security Batamaloo area of Srinagar.
According to reports, unknown militants had lobbed a grenade at the 6th India Reserve Battalion at the PCR in Batmaloo area of the city on the fateful evening.
Though no one was reported injured in the grenade attack, the government forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to nab the attackers.
Pertinently, it was second such attack in the city in the last 24 hours.
On January 16, militants lobbed a grenade at a joint team of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel at Saraf Kadal area of the Old City leaving a cop and a civilian injured.
Selection Grade Constable Mehraj Ahmad suffered splinter injuries in chest while Sartaj Ahmad Bhat suffered injuries in both legs in the grenade blast.
A security analyst said "Raj Bhawan needs to prioritise security over holding of musical concerts and other festivals."
"The top priority of the Raj Bhawan needs to be security as there can be nor compromise on the issue of security," said the analyst on the condition of anonymity. |
