Agricultural Engineer is a specialist who applies his knowledge of Biology and various engineering disciplines, mainly Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, to design machinery that is used in agricultural production and processing.
During the work, they do the task of improving farming conditions and making the environment safe for all the aspects of farming. Agricultural Engineers perform research and analysis of the daily operations of farmers and they work with new technologies in the effort to improve the existing techniques that are being used in agricultural production and processing. The improvement of these techniques often plays a crucial role in helping farmers make better use of their land and resources. Candidates have to go through the following procedure for having this type of an important profession.
Agricultural Engineer Eligibility
Aspiring candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree preferably in Agricultural Engineering or Biological Engineering from a recognised institute.
Agricultural Engineer Required Skills
Agricultural Engineers should be known a number of things to do their job well such as resource management, water conservation and storage, climatology, waste management, food engineering, as well as soil management and conservation, land profiling and surveying.
They should also be familiar with internal combustion engines used in farming and any other agricultural equipment and machinery that is relevant to their job and to the project at hand.
They should be able to work in the agricultural industry to design structures, equipment and processes.
Agricultural Engineers should also be expected to perform extensive research and development; supervise the production of machinery; specify functional requirements during the development phase; integrate components into the final design.
After completing 12 class with Non-medical subjects the aspiring candidates have to go for a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering like B.E. (Agricultural Engineering) offered by a recognised institute.
Candidates may have to take some Engineering Entrance Exam like Joint Entrance Exam to get admission to some of the best Engineering Institutes of India.
Agricultural Engineer Job Description
An Agricultural Engineer has to perform various tasks related to Agricultural activities. Some of them are:
An agricultural engineer’s job description includes designing agricultural tools, machinery, equipment and structures by applying his engineering and technology knowledge.
Testing products thoroughly for safety issues and defects before being sent to be the market.
His job includes evaluating the effectiveness of the design and incorporating any kind of changes if required.
Estimating the cost, reliability, and safety of the agricultural machinery.
Use computers and Information Technology to produce and analyse designs and generate specifications for parts.
Manage the process and control its efficiency.
Develop power machines used for tilling, fertilization, and harvesting.
Design irrigation, drainage, and flood control systems.
Develop pesticide control products and machinery for the safeguard of the farm produce.
He is also responsible for developing various ways required to conserve soil and water.
Devising ways to Improve the processing of agricultural products and their storage.
Agricultural Engineer Career Prospects
After passing the course, candidates have many job scopes at places like equipment manufacturers, agrochemical companies, government departments, forestry companies, overseas development agencies and educational institutions.
With experience, candidates could move into project management, specialist technical research and development, technical sales, business development, teaching or consultancy work.
They can also have jobs in related areas such as manufacturing and electrical or mechanical engineering. Other options include overseas agricultural development and disaster relief.
