JKSLCA organizes one-day awareness program

JAMMU, Feb 7: Jammu & Kashmir State Level Coordinating Agency (JKSLCA) under National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), today organized a one-day awareness program on "Drug Abuse and Preventive Measures" for community members at Govt. Psychiatric Hospital, Jammu in collaboration with National Institute for Social Defense (NISD). By strictly following the COVID-19 protocol, around 70 participants participated in the program. Dr. Manu Arora, HOD Psychiatric Hospital GMC Jammu; Dr. Abhishek Chauhan, Psychiatrist; Dr. Rakesh Banal, Psychiatrist; Dr. Charu Bali, Incharge OST Centre, Jammu were the chief guests on the occasion. Facilitator Shikha introduced all the chief guests and then talked about the motive of the program which is to generate awareness regarding the Drug Abuse, preventive measures and Treatment. As per National Action Plan on Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MOSJE), Government of India (GOI), programs like these need to be conducted on a regular basis covering all strata of society.
Dr. Manu Arora, HOD Psychiatric Hospital, Jammu explained that Drug/ alcohol abuse is raising day by day in the society and youth of our society is involving at large number in the addiction. He added that mental health problems that most commonly co-occur with substance abuse are depression, disorder and anxiety. Then, Dr. Abhishek Chauhan, Psychiatrist educated participants about addiction as a brain disease and other psychiatric issues that arises because of drug addiction. He also explained that treatment for substance abuse include detoxification, managing of withdrawal symptoms, behavioral therapy and support groups to help maintain sobriety.
Pamphlets were distributed among the participants. Program ended with discussions and Question-answer session and facilitator ended the program with the vote of thanks.
