JAMMU, Feb 11: Raising their voice for according due rights to the women, Shiv Sena Jammu and Kashmir unit Women's Wing staged demonstrations across the Union Territory here today. Demonstrations were held at the instructions of the party president UT J&K Manish Sahni.
The party women activists holding placards in their hands, raised slogans to draw the attention of government towards free education for girls from elementary to higher level and 50 percent reservation in government and private sector jobs besides free travel in government public transport vehicles.
The main demonstration in J&K staged outside the party's central office in Jammu which was led by President Women's Wing Meenakshi Chhibber raising the demands in high pitch slogans. Meenakshi while addressing the participants on the occasion said that Jammu and Kashmir is at 20th position in terms of literacy of females.
Women and Child Safety Cell President Jammu, Preeti Joshi and Secretary Vaishnavi Hindustani demanded to provide free travel facility to women in government public vehicles. They welcomed the raising of marriage age of girls from 18 to 21 but emphasized that this time should be properly utilized for providing quality higher education to women. Vaishnavi demanded that the government should take appropriate steps to ensure women and child safety.
Meanwhile, in Kashmir women Shiv Sainiks gathered under the chairmanship of Naseema Begum, President Women and Child Protection Cell Kashmir, staged a demonstration demanding equal rights for women in Jammu and Kashmir. Nasima said that almost all the parties, including the BJP rake up the issue of the rights of women only at the time of elections and forget the same thereafter. She said that in Uttar Pradesh, almost all the parties including BJP are making promises of free education and free travel to women till post graduation in their manifesto. But nothing is being done to educate women at the grass roots level to make them self-reliant or provide reservation to them in government jobs, she added.
