Specially abled left in lurch
2/11/2022 11:09:41 PM
Specially abled persons are getting Rs 1000/ as monthly allowance. These poor people have staged many protests in Jammu and Srinagar during the past few months to seek enhancement in their allowance. But no one wants to listen to them.
The pathetic plight of the specially abled persons is a cause of concern and the helmsmen should take note of it. They can’t just let these people languish. A comprehensive policy needs to be framed for this section of the society.
Whosoever has come into power till date has promised that these people will be given their due share in every sector but practically nothing has been done for them.
According to the guidelines children with disabilities have the right to free books, scholarships, uniform and other learning material. Special schools for children with disabilities are to be equipped with vocational training facilities. Non-formal education has to be promoted for children with disabilities. There needs to be a quota for specially disabled persons in government jobs and other sectors also. But these poor souls have been complaining for the past many years that they are not getting any benefits and have been left to fend on their own.
Specially abled people are a part and parcel of our society. They cannot be ignored. Disabled persons have the same rights as other people to take their proper place in society. They should be able to live freely and as independently as possible. To facilitate integration of disabled persons into the mainstream of society, the State shall advocate for and encourage respect for disabled persons.
The question is the administration and society doing anything to secure the rights of the disabled persons. Their pathetic condition is ample proof of the fact that a lot needs to be done for them.
Last month specially-abled persons staged a protest outside the office of Social Welfare Department (SWD) for them being ignored by the helmsmen. They couldn’t reach the top brass as the officials were not interested to meet them.
The specially abled people deserve all the care and respect. The departments which can help them should come forward and discharge their duties. Making hollow claims aren’t enough. Lot more needs to be done to help this poor section of the society as they want to live their lives in a dignified manner.
