Villagers cry foul over poor quality road work
2/20/2022 11:02:01 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Feb 20: The newly constructed road at Jabba area in Tarad Panchayat of Nowshera has developed cracks at different places. Alleging use of substandard material in construction, locals have demanded a probe into the poor quality work. Locals alleged that even though the black topping of the road was laid only four months ago, it has developed cracks which clearly indicate that substandard material was used. Similarly, several rural roads in the block have been lying in a precarious condition due to lack of repair and maintenance despite huge flow of funds, they said. Villagers alleged that lack of supervision on the part of the Public Works Department has led to the situation. The contactor engaged for the work has used poor quality materials, they said and demanded a probe into the matter. The road has turned into death traps for commuters with potholes do tting the stretch, they said, adding that after the issue was raised the administration started the patch work which is unacceptable to them. The sub-standard material being used in such projects often results in cracks or complete removal of the black topping of these roads within months after their completion, the locals said, adding that the black topping of the road stands completely removed at most of the spots. They said that a departmental inquiry should be conducted, adding that a probe is needed so that the responsibility could be fixed and in future such sub-standard work is not being executed. One of the residents said that funds for construction work should not be released until it is ensured that the work completed is satisfactory.
