Wake-Up Call
2/28/2022 11:21:16 PM

A handicapped man in Akhnoor area collecting funds to get a pothole repaired in the middle of a road should serve as an eye opener for the authorities, who seem to be in a deep slumber and are refusing to wake-up.
The government has been claiming that crores have been earmarked to repair the roads in Jammu and the development is taking place at a fast pace. Is this the development where a pothole in the middle of the road hasn’t been repaired for a long time. A handicap man has taken a begging bowl and is asking people to donate so that this pothole is filled to prevent any accident or a mishap.
Bureaucrats, who are managing the affairs of Jammu and Kashmir need to peep out from the windows of their cozy offices to see what’s happening on the ground. They can’t just keep on claiming that all is well and J&K is transforming at a rapid pace.
The road for which the handicapped man is seen collecting funds is thronged by thousands of commuters, including politicians and bureaucrats, daily. The powerful people use this road everyday despite that they don’t pay any attention towards its condition. People are facing immense problems due to this pothole in the middle of the road.
Their pleas to get it repaired have fallen flat on the deaf ears.
It’s not only the Akhnoor road which is in shambles. There are many roads in J&K that are in a chaotic condition and are awaiting attention. The potholes are a common sight in almost all the places across the Union Territory.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has failed to live upto the expectations of the people and so have the contractors, who are quite often accused of using sub-standard material to build these roads. The officials managing the J&K affairs can’t just keep on claiming that new roads are being built and the old ones are being repaired. But the ground situation contradicts their claims as the people are unhappy and to express their resentment they are resorting to novel ways of protest like begging and collecting alms to get the roads repaired. Such actions of a common man mock development claims and bring to fore the glaring realities.
