Ganderbal youth, who tried to save his building by burning himself, dies
Naib Tehsildar suspended, Tehsildar attached; no explanation sought from DC

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Mar 5: A youth, Amir Ahmad Shah, son of Abdul Hamid, who set himself ablaze during demolition in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district 10-days ago, died at SKIMS, Soura on Saturday.
Shah in a bid to prevent the razing of his building to ground on February 22 set himself ablaze. The youth setting himself on fire had evoked strong criticism from every section of the society. The divisional administration had ordered a probe following which a Naib Tehsildar was suspended and Tehsildar was attached. However, no explanation was sought from the Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal. General Secretary of Peoples Conference, Imran Raza Ansari while talking to Early Times had said, “To suspend an official who was there is an old tactic. The Committee should be constituted to probe why the youth took such a drastic step. Such incidents belie the claims of the government that there is transparency and good governance in J&K.
Asked whom he thinks is responsible for the incident, Ansari had said, “Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal doesn’t remain in the office. Even if she is there in the office I don’t know much she is in touch with the ground level. A few months before I had tweeted that Ganderbal is a headless district as the DC didn’t attend the office for one and a half month. Most of the time she remains in Jammu.”
President of Apni Party Altaf Bukhari had blamed Ganderbal administration for mishandling the demolition drive. “The administration has put the blame on a Tehsildar and Naib tehsildar for the incident. These officials were turned into scapegoats. Had I been there I would have sought the explanation from the Deputy Commissioner of the district. In J&K action is taken against low rung officials and top brass remains untouched,” Bukhari had told Early Times.
“There is martial law in J&K. One fails to understand why no attention was paid towards human life when the demolition drive was carried out. Even during the operations against anti-nationals the human lives are first saved then any operation is carried out,” he had said.
He had said that “DC Ganderbal doesn’t meet the people. In absence of a popular government, it’s mandatory for the Deputy Commissioners of every district to meet the people and hold public darbars so that grievances of the people are addressed,” he had said.
