Publicity won’t help, equip people

Shiv Sena activists recently staged a protest in Jammu to demand free electricity and water for the denizens of Jammu and Kashmir.
The protesters raised a valid point that the states which cannot even generate one Megawatt of electricity provide 300 units free electricity to their denizens while a place like J&K which supplies hydropower to the entire country doesn’t even get a single unit free.
Forget free electricity, people in J&K face unscheduled cuts and the claims about power reaching every village are confined to papers only. There are many villages in J&K which are still deprived of power. The infrastructure to transmit power is yet to reach there.
The government needs to focus on developing the facilities rather than erecting hoardings and boards. The ground situation contradicts the claims of the helmsmen, who keep on blowing the trumpet that J&K is witnessing massive development and progress.
Many people are of the opinion that bureaucrats have not been able to carry forward the mission of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in Jammu and Kashmir and have not lived upto the expectations of a common man. The officials remaining inaccessible have disappointed the common people. No one wants to listen to them.
As the summer is knocking at the doors of Jammu people, they are hoping that they would not witness a situation which they faced in 2021. Last year the Jammu region faced massive power cuts during the summer season. During the past one month the Power Department has shut the powers for long hours across the region. It becomes a routine then it means that Jammu will once again witness a hot summer as power shutdowns render gadgets useless. In December last year the entire workforce of the Power Department went on an indefinite strike to press for their demands. It was for the first time in the history of Jammu and Kashmir that the administration had to seek Army’s help to restore the essential services.
The bureaucrats need to understand that till the elected government comes into power they will have to ensure that people don’t suffer. They have to become people-friendly and remain available. Mere statements are not enough as the demands of providing free electricity like other states are being raised from all the sides. They have to peep out from their offices and take stock of ground situation. Remaining confined to four walls of their chambers won’t help anyone.
