In Jammu, Srinagar Smart cities, Govt parking lots shed responsibility for safety of vehicles
3/23/2022 12:24:51 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 22: In an allegedly bizarre decision that has drawn severe criticism from the motorists, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir had decided to disown responsibility of any vehicles parked at the Smart City lots in the twin capitals of the Union Territory. While the administration had already been “failing to ensure safety and security of people”, in the latest “babu raaj” is unwilling to even be concerned about the vehicles parked at the recently inaugurated and sophisticated parking lots, which are owned by the government.
Official documents reveal that the administration has seemingly shed responsibility of taking care of the parked vehicles despite charging “hefty parking fee.”
“We provide space only. No risk is covered for any incident during parking of vehicle. No claim for any scratch or breakage. No responsibility of any instrument like mobile, CD player,” reads the parking receipt for the Srinagar Smart City Parking Slot at Press Enclave.
Interestingly the government is charging Rs 20 as parking fee on hourly basis at such parking lots. “What is the fun of parking the vehicle at a Government owned Smart City Parking lot against such a hefty fee when the administration is not willing to take any responsibility,” said a senior Advocate on the condition of anonymity.
He said the idea of Smart City in Jammu and Srinagar cities has been reduced to a “crude joke of fleeing the motorists.”
“Even roadside parking lots outside Jammu and Kashmir ensure safety of the parked vehicles but here the babu raaj is taking things forgranted,” the lawyer said.
He said he was looking ahead to drag the “concerned officials to the Court of law for such misadventures.”
“This order of disowning responsibility for the parked vehicles is a breach of trust with the people,” he said.
When contacted a senior official who spoke to the Early Times on the condition of anonymity said the orders would be applicable across Smart City parking lots in Jammu and Srinagar cities.
“Basically, situation in Jammu and Srinagar is such that we cant take responsibility for such things as you are talking about,” the official said.
