Early Times Report

Anantnag, Apr 7: A 45-year old casual labourer of Power Development Department, Khurshid Ahmed, fell down of an electric pole while repairing a power line in Chandhara area three years ago and broke his spinal cord.
For the past three years he is bed ridden and can’t even get up on his feet. The department has not provided him with any assistance and has left him to die.
“After I got electrocuted, the department abandoned me. My friends helped me financially. No one from the department came forward to help me. It’s better to die rather than remaining crippled. I have become a liability on my family. I suffered injuries while working for the department but didn’t get anything in return.”
His son Sahil Khurshid said, “After my father suffered electrocution I left my studies and started working as a labourer.
All my dreams to do something big in my life were shattered.”
According to the official figures, eighty four daily wagers have been electrocuted during the past 5-years and nearly 64 have died.
Till date the J & K Government has not been able to come up with any comprehensive policy for these daily wagers who put their lives at stake to keep J&K illuminated.
