No cakewalk
4/28/2022 11:19:22 PM
Two former chief ministers, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have dropped enough hints about their parties i.e. National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party joining hands to contest the forthcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Both Omar and Mehbooba seem to be on the same page vis-à-vis- contesting the polls under one banner. It appears that both of them have realized that if their parties have to make an impact then they have to come together.
During the past two years J&K’s political scenario has changed and no party, including Bharatiya Janata Party, would find it easy to woo the voters.
The present regime being run by the bureaucrats in J&K has turned the people bitter. The insensitive attitude of the bureaucrats towards the common people has hurt them. This has gone against the BJP. The local BJP leaders are trying their best to tell the people that they have got nothing to do with the government but people are not ready to buy their version.
Other political parties in J&K are aware of the fact that the anti-incumbency factor against the ruling BJP can go in their favour but they also know that the political scenario in J&K has changed and if the regional parties have to keep BJP away from power then joining hands is the only way out.
The BJP leaders are hoping that after the Delimitation exercise ends, they would be able to sell many things to the people including Jammu region getting more assembly seats and abrogation of Article 370, but the prevailing “Babu Raaj” in Jammu and Kashmir has put the BJP in a tight spot. BJP emerging as single largest party is not going to be a cakewalk.
There are reports that the Delimitation Panel can submit its report within a few days and the assembly elections are on cards. But winning these polls won’t be a cakewalk for any political party as many new formations have come on the scene and these new parties will definitely reduce the vote share of the traditional parties. The forthcoming assembly elections will throw new surprises and will bring many new faces to the fore and none of the parties or leaders can take anything for granted. If NC and PDP decide to join hands then only these parties can challenge the BJP and other national parties.
