Ritika Trehan visits District Jail Amphalla

Jammu, June 6: Spokesperson Ritika Trehan today visited District Jail Amphalla to assess the services and reformatory programmes running in the jails.Superintendent District Jail Jammu, Saleem Ahmad Beig, Medical Officers and other concerned were present during her visit .She also interacted with the inmates regarding basic facilities available to them and educational/vocational programmes running in the jails.
Speaking on the occasion, Trehan observed that the need for psychological study of the behaviour of the inmates is a basic requirement of a modern day prison system which helps in applying correctional techniques and helps in reforming the individuals. She however appreciated the efforts made by the prison authorities for welfare of prisoners and initiatives taken during the Covid-19 pandemic. She encouraged the inmates to make best utilization of their time in prisons by acquiring skills available in the prisons so as to be able to contribute as responsible citizens after their release. She stressed that the prison administration should strive to propagate Mahatma Gandhi’s messages of satyagraha and ahimsa besides other Gandhian teachings to reform the prisoners.
She was also briefed that how inmates make napkins, fancy masks which during Covid-19 and nearly prepared 1 lakh masks for open market besides making beautiful paintings, dresses, sheets, bedcovers, wooden furniture etc.
Trehan took toys, blocks & games for small children and also their favorite snacks & Roohafza bottles as a token of love for inmates minorchildren . She was told that Mothers are allowed to keep their children with them till 5 yrs of age. Ritika was very much impressed to see very hygienic, good nutritive food being served to inmates , rooms are cool with coolers and fans besides there is also a Pooja room.
Superintendent District Jail Jammu, Mirza Saleem Beig speaking on the occasion underlined various steps taken by the Prisons Department for welfare of prisoners & improving prison administration.
He said that Prison administration is committed to providing better correctional programmes to the inmates which include educational/vocational training programmes, awareness programs and recreational activities.
He highlighted that the Department is working towards making jails more tech savvy by the introduction of video conferencing facility for trial/remand purpose, e-mulaqat facility & Prison Inmate Calling System besides establishment of modern interview rooms in jails.
He underlined various steps being taken in the prison for reformation of prisoners and improving prison administration. She highlighted that the Department is working towards making jails self-reliant and providing better living conditions and training facilities to the inmates.
