Farooq’s Polite No | | | National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah has politely turned down the Opposition’s offer to contest the forthcoming elections for the post of President. He has stated that Jammu and Kashmir is passing through a crucial phase and he wants to be present here. The veteran leader from J&K expressed his gratitude to the opposition leaders for extending unconditional support to him. Dr Farooq Abdullah is the first politician from J&K, who during all these years was approached by the opposition parties to contest the elections for the top most office in the country. The offer itself describes his stature. Dr Farooq by turning down the offer to be the candidate for presidential polls has sent many messages. i.e. he could be the contender for chief minister’s post in Jammu and Kashmir and he has also kept his options open for forging any possible alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the near future. During his recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh stated that assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir could be held by the end of this year. The Delimitation Panel has already submitted its final report about redrawing the assembly and parliamentary constituencies in J&K and the elections are on cards. The NC President is aware of the fact that winning the assembly polls for any party in J&K in the changed political scenario is not going to be a cake walk for any political party and he needs to be present whenever the polls are held in the Union Territory. His party needs him. Another thing that he is aware that even if he were to contest the elections for President’s post as opposition candidate, chances of victory are not that bright. It appears that Dr Farooq has taken a wise decision by staying away from the race to Rasina Hills. The veteran leader has been spearheading the campaign to revive his party in Jammu and Kashmir and has been taking all the decisions. Had he opted to contest for President’s office it could have led to the activities of the National Conference in J&K getting derailed. On the other hand it appears that Dr Farooq Abdullah is in no mood to annoy the BJP and wants to play safe. Till now, opposition parties haven’t been able to build consensus on presidential candidate as Sharad Pawar and Dr Farooq Abdullah have refused. |
