DC Doda kick starts Chinar Plantation drive under Developmental Deliverables

DODA, June 28: Deputy Commissioner Doda Vikas Sharma today launched Chinar plantation drive in the district by planting Chinar Plant here in the premises of Government Degree College.
The Chinar Plantation drive was organised by the Department of Floriculture, Parks and Gardens at Government Degree College Doda and Govt. Medical College Ghat.
Speaking on the Occasion, the Deputy Commissioner highlighted the importance of Chinar as a heritage tree and termed it as the indicator of rich plant biodiversity with tremendous environmental benefits. He said Chinar is a majestic tree whose Golden colour leaves add to the beauty during autumn. He said 50 Chinar plants in polybags transported from Directorate of Floriculture Kashmir shall be planted at different places in the District Doda. He expressed his gratitude to the Director Floriculture Kashmir for providing the plants promptly.
Pawan Kumar, Assistant Floriculture Officer, said that the plantation drive is necessary for creating awareness amongst people about the importance of Chinar trees. He informed that Government Degree College Doda and Government Medical College Ghat were identified for Plantation of Chinar Plants as a lot of space is available there and better care can be provided to the plants after their plantation. He said the Chinar plantation shall be carried out in the other institutions where space is available for plantation as the Chinar tree is large deciduous tree of the Platanaceae family growing to 30 mtr or more, known for its longevity and spreading crown. Realizing the importance of Chinar trees, he stressed the involvement of every section of the society in Chinar plantation and also called for involvement in their preservation.
Dr. Atter Singh, Principal Govt. Degree college Doda also appreciated the initiative of Floriculture Department for carrying out Chinar plantation drive in his institution as this will add beauty to the institution. Among others, Staff of government Degree college, students and Officials of Floriculture Department were present on the occasion.
