Centre for Skills and Research organizes workshop on 'Fake News and Fact Check'

JAMMU, July 2: Centre for Skill and Research in collaboration with Google News Initiative organized an online workshop on "Fake News and Fact Check" for the staff of Custom and Excise National Newspaper here today. The introductory session was taken by Mrs Ritu Koul, Director, Centre for Skills and Research, and the training was imparted by Dr. Archana Kumari, Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication and New Media, Central University of Jammu.
The training was divided into four parts. In the first part, the challenges, impact, reasons, types, and cases of fake news were elaborated while in the second session photo verification with the help of easily available tools was deliberated by the trainer. The third session was dedicated to video verification in which YouTube Data Viewer, Invid, and Watchframebyframe were described. The fourth and last session was on Social Audit where Facebook Monitoring, Twitter monitoring, YouTube search, and Website Verifications were primarily discussed.
Dr Archana explained in detail about types of fake news and told us that we share fake information due to "me first syndrome" mainly but in some cases, we genuinely think that the information needs to be shared, so we share it. She also highlighted the reasons for fake news as poor journalism, parody, punk, passion, partisanship, profit, political influence and propaganda. She explained the consequences of fake news with examples and pictures which were eye-opening for the participants.
In the photo verification session, she also showed a number of examples and explained to the participants how they can find the truth in 10 seconds. However, all through the session, she emphasized the need and importance of verification and good old fashion journalism.
The session was interactive and participants asked a number of questions at the end of the session. All together around 30 participants attended the session, all of whom were from different states of India. The participants actively participated in the quiz section as well as the true or false sess
