Rampaul flays Centre for overburdening people with GST on new items, banking
'GST on hotel rooms will destroy tourism sector'

Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 5: Former Minister and Zonal President (Jammu, Samba & Kathua), Babu Rampaul has criticized the decisions taken by GST Council in its recently held meeting and maintained that common people and small traders have been further burdened under the new slab of taxes. A meeting was organized by the Coordination Committee Jammu District (Urban), Central Zone National Conference at Bahu Fort in district Jammu which was presided over by Former Minister and Zonal President Babu Rampaul.
Babu Rampaul said that GST Council has approved imposing GST on new items and increasing the tax on a few items, in a bid to boost the govt's revenue but the common man who is already reeling under the unprecedented inflation rate has been further burdened with taxes.
He condemned the decision of GST council to hike GST on job work in relation to processing of hides, skins and leather; job work in relation to manufacture of leather goods from 5% to 12% which will hurt the interest of poor artisans engaged in this small business.
"The council has decided to impose a 12% GST on hotel rooms below Rs 1000. So far, a 12% GST was imposed on hotel tariffs above Rs 1000. The move will negatively impact the tourism sector which is currently making a recovery from Covid-19 woes," he said while citing an instance.
The GST will be levied on fees charged by banks for the issue of cheques which will make banking costly for all the people, he said and added that pre-packed and labelled food items like meat, fish, curd, and paneer will now attract GST.
Babu Rampaul maintained that the Centre Govt has made lives of poor people miserable by imposing hefty taxes on almost all the items of daily use. He demanded from the Centre to ease taxes on daily use items to save the poor man and small traders from destruction.
He also took a dig at the policies of Centre due to which rupee is witnessing the steepest ever fall against dollar which is an unhealthy sign.
Babu Rampaul appealed the Modi govt to abolish GST on the services rendered by the poor artisans and items of daily use. He also called for strengthening the Indian economy.
Besides, Dr. Vikas Sharma Coordinator Jammu District Urban and Zonal Secretary, said that eversince BJP took over the reign into its hand, besides general public, majority of youth have totally been broken and gone into a state of desperation due to anti youth policies of the present government.
He urged young generation to strengthen the hands of National Conference enabling it to redouble its efforts to get the status of Jammu and Kashmir statehood restored.
Other prominent present on the occasion include Dr Vikas Sharma, BD Dalotra, Som Raj Taroch, Rahul Mahajan, S.Nirmal Singh, Satpal, Surjit Kumar, Baldev Raj, Bhadur Lal, Manohar Lal, Romesh Chander and others.
