SKUAST celebrates World Zoonosis Day 2022 | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 6: Prof. J.P. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu (SKUAST-Jammu) inaugurated "World Zoonosis Day, 2022" at Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, RS Pura campus. This programme was sponsored by National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP), a world bank funded project of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Chief Guest on the occasion, Prof. Sharma exhorted the participants regarding zoonotic diseases and said that it is important to be aware about the common zoonotic diseases that are transmissible from animals to human beings. He further emphasized on proper animal care to reduce the food-borne zoonotic diseases. He briefly discussed three common zoonotic diseases- Rabies, Brucellosis and Tuberculosis and shared his experiences and myths related to these diseases. Prof. (Dr.) M.S. Bhadwal, Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, RS Pura welcomed and apprised the participants of school education department (20 in number) of R.S. Pura zone regarding the importance of zoonotic diseases. Besides Veterinary graduates and post-graduate students also participated in this training. He talked about the significance of Zoonosis and world zoonosis day in the era of one health concept, when at present 60% of the total infectious diseases and 70% of the emerging diseases are zoonotic in nature. He said that world zoonosis day commemorates French biologist Louis Pasteur, who administered the first dose of the first vaccine against rabies on July 6, 1885. Professor M.A. Malik, Head, Veterinary Public Health and epidemiology presented the welcome address and delivered a talk on common zoonotic diseases, their prevention and proper management. Professor Anish Yadav, National Fellow, Veterinary Parasitology and Dr. Sabahat Gazal, Assistant Professor, Veterinary Microbiology talked about parasitic and air/water borne zoonotic disease and stressed on appropriate measures for waste management, proper animal care, maintaining of proper hygiene and protection of surface water for curbing the community spread of such zoonotic diseases. Proceedings of the programme were coordinated by Dr. Ankur Sharma and vote of thanks was presented by Dr Harsh Sharma. |
