MOU for development of “Pilot Green Hydrogen Technologies” in UT of LADAKH

Jammu, July 14: In line with the country’s resolve to reduce the carbon foot print in the Power Sector, NHPC has been taking the lead in the development of Renewable Energy Resources under the dynamic & energetic leadership of Shri A.K. Singh, CMD, NHPC. Pursuing this goal, a Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) Between Govt of Union Territory of Ladakh, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh and NHPC Limited For Development of “Pilot Green Hydrogen Technologies” in District Leh UT of Ladakh was signed on 14th July ’ 2022.
MOU was signed by Shri Sh. Ravinder Kumar, Secretary PDD/NRE on behalf of Govt of Union Territory of Ladakh, Shri Shrikant Balasaheb Suse, DC/CEO on behalf of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh and Shri A.K. Pathak, Chief Executive Officer of NHPC Renewable Energy Limited on behalf of NHPC Limited.
Another MOU was also signed between Govt of Union Territory of Ladakh, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil and NHPC Limited for Development of “Pilot Green Hydrogen Technologies” in District Kargil UT of Ladakh. MOU was signed by Ravinder Kumar, Secretary PDD/NRE on behalf of Govt of Union Territory of Ladakh, Shri Santosh Sukhadeve , DC/CEO on behalf of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil and Shri A.K. Pathak, Chief Executive Officer of NHPC Renewable Energy Limited on behalf of NHPC Limited.
MOU’s were signed in the august presence of Shri R.K. Mathur, Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, UT of Ladakh, Sh. Tashi Gyaltson, Hon’ble CEC, LAHDC, Leh , Sh.Feroz Ahmad Khan, Hon’ble CERC, LAHDC, Kargil and Sh. Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Hon’ble M.P., UT of Ladakh .
During this occasion, Shri Bikram Singh, Group General Manager Nimmo Bazgo and Chutak Power Station was also present.
As per one MOU, Initially, NHPC shall consider development of Pilot Green Hydrogen fuel cell based Microgrid including Hydrogen production to meet the power requirement of NHPC guest house at Nimmo Bazgo Power Station Leh within NHPC premises. As per another MOU, hydrogen Generated in Kargil will be used in fuel cells for mobility. These fuel cells will be capable to run two BUS upto 8 hrs in the local area of Kargil.
NHPC shall upscale hydrogen production on commercial scale to supply the hydrogen need of Ladakh region in different sectors like mobility, transportation, heating, Micro-grid & subsequent MoU shall be signed separately.
These two Pilot projects will create roadmap for future development of Green Hydrogen & subsequent reduction of the carbon emission in transportation/heating sector and will also attract long term investment in Hydrogen economy creating different revenue streams & job opportunities for youth of UT of Ladakh.
NHPC has formed a wholly owned subsidiary company for development of renewable energy, small hydro and green hydrogen projects named as NHPC Renewable Energy Limited (NREL). This project shall be executed by NHPC Renewable Energy Limited, Research & Development Department of NHPC and Nimmo Bazgo Power Station of NHPC Limited.
Hon’ble Prime Minister in COP-26 had announced that India will go Carbon neutral by 2070 and by 2030 India will generate 500 GW from non-fossil fuel sources which will be 50% of total installed capacity and this initiative of UT of Ladakh under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of UT of Ladakh & NHPC will be a big milestone in this matter.
