Poll Preparations Begin
7/18/2022 11:27:37 PM

The election machinery in Jammu and Kashmir is gearing up for the conduct of assembly polls. During the past few days District Electoral Officers (DEOs) have held meetings with the representatives of the political parties and the officials who are to be engaged in the electoral process.
The Delimitation Commission that was tasked to redraw the assembly and parliamentary constituencies in J&K has already submitted its final report. The elections in the Union Territory could be held anytime. There is every possibility about the polls being conducted at the end of this year.
The authorities recently conducted the first-level checking (FLC) of EVMs and VVPATs. The preparations for the assembly elections are underway.
Jammu and Kashmir has been without an assembly since November 2018 when the then legislative assembly was dissolved by then Governor Satya Pal Malik after the PDP-BJP coalition government fell apart earlier that year.
The political equations in J&K have changed and the Jammu region is all set to get equal representation in the Legislative Assembly after 70 long years. There is every possibility that a leader from the Jammu region will become the chief minister of J&K for the first time since 1947.
The Kashmir based parties won’t find it easy to stake the claim for the CM’s post as none of these formations seem to be in a position to win that many seats that can make them reach the power corridors without the help of any national party or Jammu based parties.
J&K Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha recently stated that the elections will surely take place after the completion of the electoral roll revision. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, have said it many times in Parliament that elections in J&K will take place. So it’s just a matter of time.
The National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have decided to contest the assembly elections jointly but the leaders of these formations have stated that the preparations will start when the elections are announced.
The polls in the completely changed political scenario are not going to be a cakewalk for any party though Bharatiya Janata Party is claiming that it would form the government on its own. The fact is that BJP too won’t find it easy to strike the gold as the political situation in J&K cannot be predicted.
