| Top cop’s fake social media handle takes police by surprise | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 22: The fake social media handle of a senior official of the Jammu and Kashmir Police posted in south Kashmir has taken the JKP by surprise.
Sources said the fake Twitter handle in the name of a senior police official posted in Shopian district has been found active for around a month and posts regularly.
Sources said the Twitter handle has been “found to be posting tweets which a commoner can mistake as being from the original Twitter handle.”
Given the fact that Shopian has been on the radar of the security agencies for quite a long time, a nefarious design into creation of the account is not being ruled out.
An official told the Early Times on the condition of anonymity that nothing can be ruled out in such cases. “The first thing is that why would any ordinary person create a fake ID in the name of a senior police official thus a nefarious design you can say cannot be ruled out in any such case,” said the official.
The account created in July 2020 has mostly been posting family pictures of the official apart from some government developments.
The fake account has also posted about other officials.
What is even interesting is that the official in whose name the fake handle has been created is actually not that regular on the Twitter. And the fake handle has been asking people not to follow any other Twitter handle in the name of the said person.
Pertinently in the last few months, it has been seen that some fake handles are being created on the social media in the name of people of prominent in Jammu and Kashmir.
When contacted a senior official said the Cyber Police wing of the JKP had already been investigating such cases.
Interestingly in the past, no sooner Manoj Sinha had assumed charge as the Lieutenant Governor of J&K, a fake ID on Twitter was created in his name.
Also, a fake ID of another senior police official posted in JK that time was found active prompting the police to initiate investigations. |
