Parents Need To Act
7/27/2022 10:36:12 PM

Children getting addicted to mobile phones and other electronic gadgets are emerging as big concerns for the parents and teachers.
During the Covid times the students had to depend for their education on the online mode for two years. They attended online classes through phones, tabs and computers but this has taken a heavy toll on their mental health and has spoiled their habits.
A study titled “Increase in screen time for children in Covid times and its effects” carried out by the department of Social and Preventive Medicine has focused on the use of cell phones by children. According to it, around 63 percent of parents interviewed during the study feel that their children are addicted to an electronic device, mostly a mobile phone.
The Covid times have ended and the schools have reopened. It’s the duty of the parents to keep a check on the activities of their children and ensure that they don’t waste their time by remaining glued to their mobile phones.
Parents are worried on many counts about these games, some related to violence which causes behavioral changes as a consequence. They are also worried, truly so, that there is excessive screen time with learning impairment and behavioral issues in children. While fears of violent games having social consequences are not misplaced, the government should initiate a social advocacy programme against their use.
Parents should ensure that instead of playing games on mobile phones, children go out and participate in outdoor activities and sports. It would keep them mentally and physically fit.
Having mobile phones has become a necessity and it cannot be ignored but the possession of the mobile phone needs to be treated as a necessity only it shouldn’t become an addiction.
More than anyone it’s the parents who have to play a pivotal role in ensuring that their children don’t get addicted to the phones and other devices which can prove harmful for them. Parents need to spend more time with their children and make them understand that they need to be active and smart. The children need to be told that by sitting at one place and by remaining glued to screens they will become lazy and lethargic. Children need to be counseled in schools and in homes.
