Good roads indicate development
8/19/2022 11:14:01 PM

Good roads are an indicator of development. During the past few years the government has laid special focus on developing road infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
The pace of construction of roads has increased after the scrapping of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019 from 6.54 kilometres to 20.6 kilometres a day. Now, the total length of roads in Jammu and Kashmir has touched 41,141 kilometres.
The Road and Buildings Department during the current year launched an extensive macadamization drive across J&K and carried out the repairs of the various roads which had worn out due to weather vagaries.
As on date the officials are trying their best to ensure that there is no compromise on the quality of work. But at some places people do complain about the quality of the work not being upto the mark. However, the concerned department has been taking a note of the complaints and the grievances are being redressed. Contractors no longer enjoy a freehand and are bound by rules. If the roads constructed by them wear out without any valid reason they have to reconstruct these and that too within a stipulated period of time.
The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir this year was once again ranked among the top three at the national level for construction of road length per year under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) as the R&B Department constructed PMGSY road length of 3,284 kms in 2021-22 and connected 114 habitations through road networks by executing 427 schemes in one year.
People in the urban areas usually complain about roads getting worn out within one year, the main reason for roads getting dilapidated in the cities is the drainage factor as the rainwater seeps into the road surface and leads to its deterioration. The concerned need to look into the issue and shall address it because it would solve two problems: one that the roads would be saved and second water logging during rains can be prevented.
The concerned departments need to step up the processes during the present time and utilize the current warmer weather to best advantage. The administration needs to address the prime and allied issue on priority as these are the integral parts of the development process.
