Voting rights to non-locals in J&K unacceptable: Javed Rana
Democracy under threat as bids to disenfranchise people galore in J&K

Early Times Report

MENDHAR, Aug 20: Senior National Conference leader and President Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) Pirpanjal, Javed Ahmed Rana expressed concern over the move of giving voting rights to outsiders living in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a hard hitting statement issued to media persons, he categorically said that the voting rights to non-locals in J&K is unacceptable as it will simply disenfranchise the subjects of J&K as any number of people from outside J&K can come and exercise their right to franchise here. He said that it is sad that fearing imminent rout the BJP is trampling the very basis of democracy through misusing power.
The former MLA questioned the very formation of federal Legislative Assembly because by allowing the outsiders to vote, the concerned constitutional body is killing the purpose of delegating power to the masses to elect the political representatives of their choice to run the government. He questioned “What is the fun of having a federal legislative Assembly, if unrelated people are able to influence the government formation?”
Javed Rana said that the move should not be seen in isolation, rather as a part of the well-orchestrated plan to disenfranchise the people of J&K. He said that political parties should positively respond to the call of Dr Farooq Abdullah’s All Party Meeting to discuss the implications of the move and devise a common united strategy.
The senior NC leader said that one after another attempt is being made to weaken democracy in the J&K and it is the time that entire opposition should stand like a rock to stop the ruling party BJP from devastating the democracy in the region.
