Congress pays tributes to Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary

JAMMU, Aug 20: To mark the 78th birth anniversary of India's Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi Congress activists under the leadership of Former MLC Subash Gupta organized a function at Dayala Chak. Former MLC Subash Gupta along with Yugal Kishore Bali, Narinder Rathore, Ruldoo Ram, Dr. Rameshwer Sharma, Sukhdev singh and others offered floral tributes to portrait of Rajiv Gandhi.
Subash Gupta memorizing his achievements said that he was man of dynamic qualities of leadership, farsightedness. He said that India progressed rapidly under the visionary policies of Late Prime Minster during his tenure as Prime Minister of India.
Rajiv Gandhi had also promoted science and technology by bringing computer and internet to India and the National Policy on Education (NPE) was announced in 1986 to modernise and expand higher education programmes across the country.
Rajiv Gandhi empowered the youth by bringing down the voting age. In 1989, the 61st Amendment Act of the Constitution was passed which lowered the voting age from 21 years to 18 years. The foundation of the panchayati raj institutions was also strengthened by the 73rd and 74th Amendments to the Constitution in 1992. "He was of the strong opinion that India cannot progress unless and until Panchyat Raj is not introduces in rural India," he added.
Subash Gupta further said He founded a central government-based institution namely Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya System in 1986 for the upliftment of the rural section of the society providing them free residential education from 6th till 12 class..
