Addition of estimated 25 lakh extra voters include first time voters: J&K govt

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Aug 20: Amid massive uproar over the inclusion of new voters, Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday clarified that the estimate of adding 25 lakh voters while revising the electoral roll in the Union Territory also include those who have attained the age of 18 years as on October 1, 2022.
A major political controversy has erupted in J&K after Chief Electoral Officer Hirdesh Kumar on Wednesday said that every citizen of the country "staying ordinarily" in J&K can register as a voter here and cast vote in the next assembly elections after the abrogation of Article 370.
Kashmir's mainstream parties have alleged that the addition of new "non-local" voters is aimed at benefiting the Bharatiya Janata Party. The National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has called for an all-party meeting on Monday in Srinagar to discuss the future strategy.
"This ( 25 lakh voters) is a misrepresentation of facts, which is being spread by the vested interests," J&K's Directorate of Information and Public Relations said on Saturday.
"..This revision of electoral rolls will cover existing residents of the UT of J&K and increase numbers of the voters who have attained the age of 18 years as on 1.10.2022 or earlier," it added.
"There is no change in the special provisions for Kashmiri migrants for their enrolment in the electoral rolls of their original native constituencies. They will continue to be given option of voting at their place of enrolment or through postal ballot or through for specially setup polling stations at Jammu, Udhampur, Delhi, etc" the DIPR said.
It added that Summary revision of electoral rolls are undertaken by Election Commission from time to time according to laid down process.
"This is to enable young persons who become eligible to register themselves as voters. Besides, it also allows a person who has changed his ordinary place of residence to enroll at new location by getting himself deleted at the old location," the DIPR said.
