Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 3: In a major threat to the social fabric of Kashmiri society, the college and school bunk off by kids and youth has reached “alarming proportions” in the valley prompting the administration to launch a crackdown starting from the summer capital of Srinagar here.
Official sources said in the wake of rising complaints of bunking off to wander around, the Srinagar administration has directed the Additional Development Commissioner and other senior officials to opt for a surprise inspection of public places like parks and gardens in particular during the school office hours. More districts like Pulwama and Baramulla being added to the list, the sources said.
Sources said the teams led by ADC Srinagar and police officials have been raiding numerous such vulnerable spots in the summer capital in the last few days.
A senior official said during the surprise inspection scores of youth and even school kids were found bunking off the educational institutions whereas many of such accused were seen smoking as well.
The sources said the drive has been launched following complaints received by police in particular that the kids were not only bunking off classrooms but that some of them were also resorting to drug abuse.
The matter had come to the notice of the police recently when the residents of Nishat had complained that youngsters from other areas of Srinagar would frequent the tourist hub not only to bunk off the classes but also to resort to smoking or drug abuse.
The sources said during a joint meeting of police and civil administration it was resolved that a formal crackdown was a must to get rid of the menace.
Sources said parents of such kids are also being approached by the police and civil administration for counseling.
“Basically parents have also been playing a role by pampering their kids beyond limits as a result of which such menace has hit the Kashmiri society,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
The government has asked district administrations across Kashmir to keep a vigil on the development.
