Major relief for power consumers
9/9/2022 11:25:56 PM
In a major relief to consumers, the Administrative Council headed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has approved an amnesty scheme for domestic power consumers in Jammu and Kashmir.
The decision, according to the officials, would benefit more than 5.50 lakh domestic consumers. The decision taken by the Administrative Council has waived off an amount of Rs. 937.34 crore, accumulated as surcharge or interest, on account of non-payment of timely dues.
The people-friendly decision taken by the LG Sinha led administration is a welcome step as it has reduced the burden on a common man. He has to clear the power dues without paying any interest.
The opportunity provided by the Administrative Council to consumers to settle their dues is the last chance and they should grab it to avoid disconnection and other issues.
During the past three years multiple steps have been taken in the Union territory to improve the power scenario and set the system right. Revenue collection has always been a challenge for the Power Department in Jammu and Kashmir but after J&K’s transition into a Union Territory and Power Development Department being split into Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited (JPDCL) and Kashmir Power Development Corporation (KPDCL) the revenue collection has improved. The electricity distribution system has become better as both the corporations are ensuring that the consumers don’t face any problems and the issues faced by them are resolved without any delay.
People don’t crib anymore to pay the bills as the electricity has been made available to them. As consumers they have realized that if they are utilizing the service then they have to pay for it. The complaints about pesky power cuts and unscheduled shutdowns have come down. In a nutshell the reforms in the Power Department have proven to be beneficial for the consumers.
The new steps and the reorganization of one of the most important departments in the Union Territory have helped the consumers to get better access to power. The Union Territory has been brought at par with other States and UTs across the country and the dream of J&K getting electricity 24x7 is all set to come true. The LG Sinha led administration deserves kudos for all the hard work it has put into transform the ailing power sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
