Centre-ECI must come clear on J&K elections: Harsh Dev
9/11/2022 10:37:40 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 11: Accusing the BJP govt and Election commission of dilly dallying over the issue of holding Assembly Elections in J&K, Harsh Dev Singh former minister regretted the denial of a democratic govt and continuance of centre’s proxy rule in the erstwhile state. He expressed dismay over the unilateral decision of the ECI to postpone the publication of final electoral rolls for J&K from Oct 25 to Nov 25 without assigning any reason and described it as a deliberate move to delay and deny elections in the UT. He said that rumours were agog that BJP has prevailed upon the ECI to postpone the publication of final electoral rolls as it did not want J&K elections to be held in Nov-Dec alongwith Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat. There were further reports that BJP govt had no intentions at all to hold Assembly elections in J&K and wanted to continue its proxy rule in the erstwhile state through obsequious bureaucratic requisitioned from outside the UT. He was addressing several public meetings in villages Drounthal, Samroli, Seuna, Larh, Mani etc during his two days tour of Chenani constituency. Alleging total neglect and deprivation of small towns and villages in the matter of development and provision of basic amenities, Mr Singh said that there were no takers for the shrill cries of people suffering on multiple counts. He said that while the local officers had been sidelined, the outside bureaucrats owing allegiance to BJP and without requisite experience or knowledge of local issues had been assigned significant positions in the UT thus adversely impacting upon the delivery of public services. Majority of the roads in rural areas had become non trafficable, water supply schemes rendered defunct, Power crisis become unprecedented and schools become non functional due to extreme paucity of staff. And despite massive public uproar, the highly apathetic bureaucrats had failed to respond, asserted Mr Singh.
Emphasizing the need for early restoration of democratic govt, Mr Singh said that while bureaucracy enjoyed authority sans accountability, it was the elected representatives alone who were accountable to the people and they only could address the day to day problems of the people and work to fulfil their aspirations. Urging upon the president of India to intervene to save democracy and rule of law in J&K, Mr Singh called for a clear and unambiguous statement over the timing of Assembly elections in J&K so as to alley the apprehensions amongst the people of the UT.
