Jammu, Sept 11: With the political activities gaining momentum in Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Home, Minister Amit Shah is likely to visit the Union Territory soon, highly placed sources told the Early Times.
The sources close to the corridors of power in New Delhi said in the wake of political developments including upcoming formation of a new party by former Chief Minister and Congress rebel Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Home Minister will visit both the Jammu and Kashmir regions. It was reliably learnt that Shah is expected to address multiple rallies in Jammu and Kashmir each during the visit.
Sources said apart from addressing the public gatherings, Shah will hold meetings with the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha and other dignitaries to take stock of the situation, especially on the security front and infrastructure development. The sources said Shah would also address the Bharatiya Janta Party leadership in the twin regions. A senior Bhartatiya Janta Party leader told the Early Times that the “recent political developments and unwanted controversy surrounding compilation of the electoral rolls” has prompted the BJP strongman to visit the region in particular.
Sources said the BJP leadership in Jammu and Kashmir wanted Shah to visit the UT for “moral boosting of its cadres” in preparedness to the announcement of much-awaited Assembly elections that can be announced at the end of this year.
This would be Shah’s second visit to the state this year.
Earlier in March, he had visited Jammu to attend the 83rd CRPF Raising Day function. Before that, he had undertaken a 4-day visit in October in 2021, which was his first here after the abrogation of Article 370. During his visit last year, Shah had said he will talk to the people of Kashmir instead of talking to Pakistan.
In June this year, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said there is a possibility that Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections could be held by the end of 2022.
Addressing a function to celebrate the 200th year of the coronation of Maharaja Gulab Singh in Jammu, he had said: "By this year-end, there is a possibility of holding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir."
