Krishi Vigyan Kendra organises field day on maize crop at Bharakh

JAMMU, Sept 13: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu(SKUAST-J) organized field day on maize crop here today at Bharakh village of Pouni block in Reasi district of J&K .The programme was enthuastically attended by a number of farmers of the area. The programme was organised under the dynamic stewardship of Vice Chancellor and able guidance of Director Extension (DE), Prof.SK Gupta of SKUAST-J. The programme was initiated by Dr. Banarsi Lal, Sr. Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi with the warm welcome of the farmers. He started the programme with the brief objectives of Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) especially on maize crop and highlighted the scientific production technologies by which farmers can increase the maize crop production. He suggested the farmers to the use of quality maize hybrids to have more production and elaborated the certain aspects required for hybrid maize production. He highlighted the multiple role of maize as food, feed, fodder etc. He narrated that Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) laid by the KVK signify the technologies by which farmers can get maximum yield from per unit area per unit time. He suggested the farmers that every year they should purchase new certified seed of maize hybrids and informed them to use only the recommended varieties for the district. He emphasised on line sowing and maintenance of proper plant population in maize crop for maximum returns. He further added that proper doses of quality weedicides can be used by the farmers to eradicate the different weeds in maize crop. He urged the farmers for the commercial farming of maize so as to generate more farm income. He stressed on the Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in scientific cultivation of maize crop. He said the farmers that the maize crop is sensitive to the moisture stress and moisture excessive conditions and suggested them to drain the water from maize fields. The scientist also elaborated important diseases of maize crop and gave their proper remedial measures. He demonstrated the hybrid varieties of maize crop laid at farmers' fields. Farmers were motivated after observing the results of hybrid maize fields and were ready to adopt the technologies recommended by the KVK. It is worthwhile to mention here that KVK has laid Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) on Kharif maize in 5 ha of area in Reasi district. During this programme various quarries regarding the scientific farming were asked by the farmers which were answered satisfactorily by the officials. During the programme, an awardee farmer of KVK, Reasi, S.Gurdev Singh was also present who shared his experiences with the other farmers of area. Farmers appreciated the efforts of KVK, Reasi for upliftment of the farming community through improved maize cultivation practices. The programme was assisted by Manohar Lal and concluded by Dr.Banarsi Lal with the formal vote of thanks.
