KVK organizes training programme on SHGs

JAMMU, Sept 20: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) organized training programme on "Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Women Empowerment" here at Akhali village of Katra block in Reasi district of J&K which was enthuastically attended by the number of women farmers of the area. The programme was organised under the dynamic stewardship of Vice Chancellor, Prof.JP Sharma and able guidance of Director Extension Prof. SK Gupta of SKUAST-J. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Sr. Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi initiated the programme with the warm welcome of participants. During the technical session, he elaborated the concept of Self Help Group (SHG) and discussed on various income generation activities among the rural women. He spoke in detail on the different roles of SHGs and their impact in empowering the rural women, boosting employment opportunities and income generation. He discussed on regular saving, record keeping, regular meetings, regular interloaning, linkage with banks, repayment practices etc. He said that the SHGs can transform the rural areas by raising the socio-economic conditions of the rural women. He guided the trainees on the income generation activities in agriculture with a vision to double the farmers' income. He highlighted the importance of homogeneity, fortnight meetings and book keeping for the significant results in SHGs. He also guided the participants on packaging, leveling, branding and marketing of processed agro-products. He stressed on the agri-entrepreneurship development at village level by working in groups and discussed on natural farming. The Scientist guided the participants on aonla candy making, pickles making, jam making, juice making etc. He emphasised on value addition in fruits, vegetables, pulses and spices to enhance the income and employment among the rural women. He also guided the trainees on the preservation of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Smt.Jyoti Devi, an awardee woman farmer of the area was also present, who shared her experience on food processing with other participants. During the programme quarries regarding the value addition in agriculture were raised by the group's members which were answered by the officials in a satisfactorily way. The participants thanked KVK, Reasi scientists for organizing such a useful programme. Manohar Lal of KVK, Reasi assisted in arranging logistics and mobilising the trainees for the programme. The visit was culminated by Dr. Banarsi Lal with the formal vote of thanks.
