KVK promotes organic horticultural crops cultivation

JAMMU, Sept 26: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Directorate of Extension, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting the organic horticultural crops cultivation in Reasi distt. of J&K so as to produce the quality fresh organic horticultural crops and to enhance the income and employment of the farmers of hilly areas. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi is imparting skills on commercial cultivation of organic horticultural crops to the farmers of hilly areas so that chemicals free quality organic horticultural crops can be produced and nutritional security can be mitigated. Farmers are regularly guided on organic formulations such as vermicomposting technology, cow urine, Panchgavya, beejamrit, jeevamrit, fermented butter milk preparations, mulching etc. by utilizing the local resources. Farmers are also guided on the use of Neem Cake, fruitfly traps, Pheromone Traps, sticky traps, Neem Oil etc. to utilize in the organic horticultural crops for more yields and returns. According to Sr. Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal, commercial cultivation of organic horticultural crops can play a significant role in increasing the income and employment among the farmers' of hilly areas. He said that Reasi district of J&K has an immense potential in organic horticultural crops and farmers can produce chemical free horticultural crops by the adoption of eco-friendly low- cost horticultural practices. According to him organic farming helps to improve the health status of the soil and organic farm produce is helpful to improve the health status and create immunity among the human beings. He said that KVK is providing the insights about the combination of management techniques to maintain soil quality and fertility, control weeds, pests and diseases for the organic production of horticultural crops. He narrated that KVK is guiding the farmers on the importance of organic horticultural crops and creating importance on its economic advantage. He expressed that KVK is also guiding on crop rotation, pulses production, protected cultivation, multiple cropping, intercropping, organic certification process etc. He narrated that KVK is providing the proper packaging and marketing practices to the farmers so that the farmers can generate more farm income. It is worthwhile to mention here that many new farmers are showing keen interest towards the commercial cultivation of organic horticultural crops.
