Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Reasi promotes lemon grass farming

REASI, Oct 26: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting the lemon grass farming as an enterprise in Reasi district of J&K and many new farmers are coming forward for the adoption of its farming. According to Sr.Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr.Banarsi Lal, Reasi distt. of J&K has an immense potential in lemongrass farming.
He said that some areas of Reasi distt. are heavily infested with monkeys menace and KVK is promoting lemon grass farming as this crop is not damaged by the monkeys. He expressed that KVK, Reasi is endevouring to minimize the effect of monkey menace in the area by imparting the trainings and encouraging the farmers for the scientific cultivation of lemon grass farming. He narrated that farmers can generate more income and employment by the cultivation of lemongrass.
He informed that lemon grass contains number of medicinal and aromatic properties such as carminative and insect repellent, perfumes, cosmetics, herbal teas and non-alcoholic beverages. He said that it can also be used as an antioxidant. He further said that lemon grass oil has strong lemon-like fragrance, due to high percentage of citral in its oil and its commercialization can open some new avenues of income and employment in the distt. He informed that this crop is commercially grown by slips and once this crop is planted in the field farmers can get profit for five years. He said that under rain fed conditions, this crop can be harvested for three times in a year. He said that steam distillation is used to extract the oil from the leaves of lemongrass which is rampantly used in soap, cosmetics, medicines and insecticides. He also added that farmers can grow this crop in their fallow land to get more profits. He stressed on the cluster based approach in its cultivation. He said that by the value addition in lemongrass farmers can get more benefits. He narrated that lemongrass can transform the lives of the farmers of monkeys affected areas of the distt. He said that lemongrass is a successful innovative agricultural practice and can prove as a profitable venture in the distt.
