MeT predicts snowfall as minimum temperature improves in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Dec 29: Meteorological Centre forecast of scattered to fairly widespread light rain and snow during the next 24 hours even as minimum temperature improved but still remained below freezing point in Kashmir valley on Thursday.
Currently the weather is cloudy throughout J&K with forecast of Intermittent Light to Moderate Rain (in plains of Jammu) /Snow in Kashmir at many places (75 per cent chance) from evening of December 29 to 30 Forenoon. Thereafter there would be colder days & warmer nights.
The weather will mainly remain dry from December 31 to January 5 with no forecast of any major snowfall.
Although, there's no forecast of any major snowfall but even light Snowfall & below freezing temperature may lead to temporary disruption of surface transportation on Sonmarg-Zojila, Gurez-Bandipora, Mughal road, Sadnatop etc. on December 30, the MeT said.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, had a low of minus 3.2 degree Celsius against last night's minus 5.6 degree Celsius. It was still minus 1.1 degree Celsius below normal for this period of the season.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir, which experienced the season's coldest night at minus 7.4 degree Celsius a day ago, recorded minus 4.5 degree Celsius on Thursday. It was minus 0.7 degree Celsius below normal during this period of the season for the valley of shepherds. Ski resort of Gulmarg had a low of minus 4.8 degree Celsius against minus 6.0 degree Celsius against which was 1.4 degree Celsius above normal during this time of the season for the valley of meadow in north Kashmir. Qazigund on Srinagar Jammu national highway recorded a low of minus 3.2 degree Celsius against minus 5.0 degree Celsius while Kukernag had a low of minus 2.3 degree Celsius on Thursday. Frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara had a low of minus 3.3 degree Celsius against , MeT office said.
