Krishi Vigyan Kendra promotes strawberry cultivation

REASI, Dec 31: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting the scientific cultivation of strawberry in Reasi distt. of J&K. KVK, Reasi has laid the Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) of strawberry crop of Chandler variety at the farmers' fields and all the technical guidelines regarding the scientific cultivation of strawberry are provided to the farmers. According to Sr. Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal KVK, Reasi is endeavoring to enhance the income and employment among the farmers by the introduction of new ventures in the district and farmers are guided regarding the new innovations in agriculture. He said that strawberry is rich in proteins, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and vitamins such as A, B1, B2 and C and is considered as the natural source of antioxidants. He added that strawberry crop has ample scope in the district and farmers can improve their livelihood by its commercial cultivation. He narrated that KVK scientists are upgrading the knowledge of the farmers on natural farming and guiding them on the preparation of organic formulations such as Jeevamrit, Beejamrit, Panchgavya etc. so that they can get quality crop production by reducing the cost of cultivation. He further said that KVK is also promoting the use of mulching material in strawberry cultivation so that the moisture, weed management and quality of fruits can be improved. He expressed that better quality of fruits can help to find more marketing channels and thus the farmers can generate more income. He said that KVK is also guiding the farmers on intercropping to get more returns. He informed that many new farmers of the area are showing the keen interest in the strawberry cultivation and are ready to adopt the technologies demonstrated by KVK, Reasi. He added that KVK scientists are acquainting the farmers on disease and insect-pest management, and quality improvement in strawberry crop. He informed that by the value addition in strawberry farmers can fetch more money.
