Srinagar records season's coldest night at -6.4 C

Srinagar, Jan 5: Unabated cold continues to shiver Kashmir valley as Srinagar experienced the coldest night of the season at -6.4 degree Celsius on Thursday.
The Meteorological Centre office said that Srinagar recorded a low of minus 6.4 degree Celsius on Thursday against minus 5.2 degree Celsius recorded the previous night. It was 4.3 degree Celsius below normal during this period of the season.
This was the second lowest temperature witnessed in Srinagar during the last five years in the month of January. The city recorded a minimum of minus 8.8 degree Celsius on January 31, 2021, Faizan Arif, an independent weather observer, said.
On December 25 the minimum temperature had plunged to seasons lowest at minus 5.8 degree Celsius in Srinagar this year.
Major parts of Dal Lake and other water bodies froze as a thick layer of icy surface emerged on Thursday due to the intense plummeting temperatures. Shikara men were seen breaking the icy surface of the lake to make the way forward.
Kupwara also recorded the season's lowest minimum temperature at minus 6.2 degree Celsius on Thursday against minus 6.0 degree Celsius the previous night. It was 3.7 degree below normal during the period of the season for the frontier Kashmir district. Tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir remained the coldest place with a low of minus 9.2 degree Celsius against minus 9.4 degree Celsius despite a slight improvement in temperature witnessed today.
Gulmarg in north Kashmir had a low of minimum 7.5 degree Celsius on Thursday against minus 8.4 degree Celsius recorded a day ago.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 6.5 degree Celsius while Kokernag had a low of minus 4.4 degree Celsius on Thursday.
Kashmir valley is bracing for light snow over scattered places towards January 7 night and snowfall/rain in plains of Jammu at many places of Jammu and Kashmir with 70 per cent chances from January 8-10, Met office said.
