Cong ignores NC, PDP request to support restoration of Art 370 | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 13: Although both the Peoples Democratic Party and the National Conference have “out of way” supported the just concluded Bharat Jodo Yatra of Rahul Gandhi, Congress leadership is ready to support the demand of restoring Article 370. During and after the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the leadership of both parties mounted pressure on Congress leaders to say a few words about Article 370 but they failed to convince the national party. “After completion of the Bharat Jodo Yatra leaders of both NC and PDP visited Delhi and held interactions with the Congress leadership to get some assurance about Article 370 but the top brass of Congress is non-commital on supporting this demand”, sources said. Sources said that leadership of Congress is ready to enter into a tactical understanding with the National Conference and PDP in the next assembly elections in J&K but not on the condition of supporting Article 370. There is fear among Congress leadership that openly supporting the restoration of Article 370 would be proved disastrous for the party in other parts of the country. Important to mention here that during the just concluded Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi, and other leaders avoided touching the issue of Article 370. During the Bharat Jodo Yatra Congress leaders faced questions regarding the party’s stand on the demand for the restoration of Article 370. Instead of giving a direct reply to such questions, Congress leaders announced not to touch such political issues during the “non-political” Bharat Jodo Yatra. “I do agree that there are many political issues in Jammu and Kashmir including Article 370 but we will not react to such issues during the Bharat Jodo Yatra”, the general secretary of the Congress party and head of the communication department of the party Jairam Ramesh replied when a reporter asked about party’s stand on the demand of the restoration of pre-August 5, 2019 situation. |
