| Man trapped under snow avalanche dies | | |

Srinagar, Feb 18: A 26-year-old man who was trapped in a snow avalanche in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday died after being rescued, officials said on Saturday
An avalanche hit the upper area of Chontwari Machil at around 3.15 pm on Friday, trapping a newlywed couple Aijaz Ahmad Tantray and Zareena. The two got married in December 2022.
..The newlywed couple was returning to their village when they came under a massive avalanche. While Zareena Begum had a narrow escape, Aijaz got buried under 10-15 feet of snow,? Army officials said.
They said an Army patrol witnessed the incident and immediately commenced rescue operation and also called for reinforcement. Additional Army Avalanche Rescue Teams, Police, Civil medical team and locals quickly reached the incident site and immediately commenced search and rescue operation.
Further, the Army inducted Tiranga Mountain Rescue Team, Army Medical Team and Avalanche Rescue Dog from Z Gali by Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH). After a four hour long massive search and rescue operation the individual was recovered at around 6.40 pm and immediate medical aid was administered for resuscitation. However, unfortunately the individual succumbed to his injuries,? Army said.
Aijaz was declared dead by the doctors and the body was handed over by the Police to his family for conducting last rites, they said. |
