J&K on way to make roads safe
2/26/2023 10:43:10 PM

The Jammu and Kashmir Government has been working towards making the roads safe in the Union Territory to bring down the number of accidents.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha while chairing a high-level meeting to review the Road Safety measures in J&K directed the concerned departments to take multiple steps to make the roads safe.
He directed the officials to conduct causative analysis of road accidents for multi-pronged road safety strategy and complete the works of crash barriers installation at the identified spots.
Jammu and Kashmir is a hilly region and the accidents do keep on taking place. But during the past few years the government besides taking precautionary measures has acted tough against the transporters and others who had become the habitual offenders.
It has been observed that the old vehicles used by the transporters to ferry the commuters are usually involved in the accidents. However, in recent years the Transport Department has not renewed the life certificates of the vehicles that have outlived their utility. The vehicles running without the life certificates have been seized and stand discarded.
Traffic policemen have actively acted against the menace of overloading by imposing heavy penalties on the transporters who don’t adhere to the laws. The government has been creating awareness about the precautions that need to be taken and has been stressing on the stakeholders to work towards the common goal of road safety and reducing road fatalities.
According to the officials during the past two years, 100 unauthorized cuts have been plugged, besides crash barriers have been set along 98.65 Kms and 3104 speed limit signages have also been erected and the work is on to make the roads in the Union Territory safer.
The roads in hilly areas in Jammu division need extra attention as these are very narrow. Many accidents do take place in these areas. During the past two years the J&K administration has focused on making the roads in hilly areas safe and the work is on to widen the narrow stretches.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha is personally monitoring the ongoing works and is taking the regular updates from the concerned departments. J&K is on way to make the roads safe.
